The Birth of a small business
Imperium Shaving began the way many great companies do — in a garage. In 2014, founder Dan Janssen, who grew up woodworking, crafted his first razor as a gift for a friend. That gift sparked the idea that became Imperium. From the start, his goal was simple: to create a razor that was as beautiful as it was durable. Early prototypes led to long nights experimenting with exotic woods, finishes, and forms until Dan developed a proprietary coating that transformed wood into a razor built to last a lifetime.
What started as a one-man workshop quickly grew into a full-time venture. By 2018, Imperium had moved into a historic Baltimore mill, assembling a talented team of artisans — many of them women woodworkers — who carried forward the traditions of craft in a modern studio filled with sawdust, music, and the scent of linseed oil.
Today, Imperium has found a new home in North Carolina, where our workshop continues to honor the same values of artistry and precision. Here, surrounded by the South’s vibrant community of makers and designers, we remain dedicated to elevating everyday rituals through heirloom-quality craftsmanship.

RAZOR CARE
Store in a dry place — You can get you razor wet. But prolonged moisture can damage wood and metal over time, so always store it dry.
Never leave in the shower — Steam and standing water can shorten the life of your razor’s finish.
Treat it like a luxury tool — Your razor is handcrafted from fine materials and should be handled with the same care as a watch, fountain pen, or piece of jewelry.
Change blades correctly — Do not pull or snap blades off the razor head. Always use the release button to remove and replace cartridges safely.
Wipe after use — Lightly towel-dry the handle and head after shaving to preserve the wood’s natural beauty and prevent buildup.
